Obama on ISIS

The linked speech by Obama:

is remarkable because this is the first time I remember when he touched on the link between Islamism and Islam. Of course he does not mention either Islamism or Islam but rather refers to “terrorism” and “religion”, and claims there is no connection between the two. But up until now Obama was not willing to even consider the link between Islamism and Islam so to hear from him that “ISIS speaks for no religion” is a step forward. Negating a sanitised version of the statement which is obvious to every sane person on the planet marks a progress from ignoring the issue altogether. Paraphrasing Wolfgang Pauli’s famous quip, before this speech Obama was “not even wrong” but now he is so this is a step in the right direction.

The speech also features smoke-and-mirrors rhetoric implying that since ISIS murders Muslims it cannot represent Islam. This argument is flawed because religions, just like totalitarian ideologies of Nazism and Bolshevism, typically first go after their own to guard the ideological purity required to suppress others. This is evidenced by historical events like Counter-Reformation, Night of the Long Knives or Stalin’s purges. The dissent from within is so dangerous because it undermines the cohesion of totalitarian regimes – which is why it must be stamped out first. Muhammad understood this very well and Quran (8:1) professes “when a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatises from Islam, he deserves to be killed”. Of course the Muslims mentioned in Obama’s speech who get slaughtered are viewed by ISIS as heretics and so deserve what they get.

But one may ask why Obama instead of beating around the bush does not come out and openly say that in his opinion Islamism has nothing to do with Islam. This would be a lot more direct than first using generic terms like “terrorism” and “religion” and then resorting to idle rhetoric arguments. Would you, the esteemed reader of da-boss, please contemplate this question? Why will the Western politicians not simply explain once and for all that murder and violence are un-Islamic? Does anyone want to take a guess?
